In 1988, Aviaco had just updated its corportate identity with a new logo, and also introduced some other new features such as the "clase preferente" business class (in the DC-9 fleet only) to match Iberia offer on domestic flights. Most Spanish cities were linked with Madrid and/or Barcelona, but there were also many trasversal links, regional flights in the Canaries and Balearic islands, and also some other odd city pairs such as Murcia - Almería. Some routes were flown by Iberia and Aviaco at the same time, but there was no real competetion between the two airlines..
