Air Canada (1988)

Scanning the inside pages of this Air Canada timetable was almost impossible, so I am just posting the route maps and little more today.

A few more images, from another edition of the same timetable:

This page about Air Canada's smoking onboard policies is just another example of this global trend in the late 80's...

London City Airways (1988)

As the name suggests, London City Airways flew from London City Airport, which had been recently open to the public at the time.  This was a British Midland subsidiary airline that was 100% targeted at the business traveller. The logo the airline was using was actually using a full business suit :-)

This brochure was intended for travel agents, and it provided the full schedules of this little airline as well as fare information, inflight services, etc.

This was 1988 and there was still a smoking section in London City flights...

British Airways (2003), Gibraltar & Southern Spain

These flights were actually operated by GB Airways, a British Airways franchise partner at the time.

✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈

I yesterday blogged about the Iberia sponsorship of the Expo 92 at Seville and the Barcelona Olympic games. Ten yers earlier, in 1982, Spain was hosting the Word Football Cup and even if Iberia was also the designated official carrier, Aviaco also took this role and edited some advertising items.

Aviaco published this newspaper advert with one of its DC-8. At the time the airline had 34 planes (DC-9 and DC-8) and flew some three million passengers yearly. They also claim their costumer service was awarded a Golden Prize in 1981 (?!) but it is not clear who was awarding the prize. Actually, The airline had a pretty low reputation at the time.

Just one day before the London 2012 Olympic games take start, a short trip down the memory lane back to the 25th of July, 1992, 20 years ago, when Barcelona'92 Olympic games were being held. As you may perhaps remember, this was Cobi, the Olympic mascot, dressed up as a pilot on an Iberia plane.

Iberia flew the Olympic torch and set up a dedicated infoline at Barcelona during the games:

The Olympic games at Barcelona were not the single event in the country at the time; Seville was hosting the Universal Exposition that year. Here we have some souvenirs: a sticker and a pin showing Curro, the Expo 92 mascot, alongside the Iberia logo, and also some printed ads about a daytrip service called "Expo día". It included a daytrip (advertised as "Vas, ves y vuelves", or "go, take a look and come back") from either Madrid or Barcelona. Ticket prices started at  19900 pesetas from Madrid or 26900 from Barcelona. It was certainly not cheap, but also not that very expensive if we take in count that the tickets, at 4000 pesetas for a day pass were not a bargain, and the flight fares level at the time was very high.

Curro also paid a visit to Frankfurt airport when he was promoting the Expo around the world:

Iberia (1973/74 + 1975), Reino Unido / Irlanda

Tourism was booming in Spain in the mid 70's and of course Iberia benefited from it, transporting European travellers to beach destinations in the Mediterranean coast, often in 1-stop direct flights. The 1973 timetable includes international and domestic fares.

The 1975 timetable shows all possible connections between London and the airports in the domestic network, plus other destinations in the Americas (at the time Iberia was serving almost all capital cities in Latin America) and Africa (Lagos, Kinshasa, Johannesbourg). A few years later Iberia was celebrating its 50th anniversary and starting flights to the Middle East, and the Bombay-Tokyo route would start some years later.

Alitalia (1976), Reino Unido / Irlanda

Local edition for the UK and Irish markets. I really like the destinations map in the cover of this brochure. Italy actually appears way bigger than it really is, but then Alitalia and its domestic branch ATI had a logically comprehensive coverage of the country. The main airlines in Western Europe actually flew all of them to the same intercontinental destinations, more or less. This included Bombay, Tokyo and Sidney and Melbourne in Australia. Iberia was much more focused on the South American market back then.

Lufthansa / SAA cargo (1970)

In the early 70's, Lufthansa and SAA started a joint cargo service (operated by a Lufthansa 707) between Frankfurt and Johannesburg, via Nairobi.
