A finales de los 90 la empresa entró en una espiral de recorte de servicios, debidos en parte a una serie de desastrosos accidentes y a la crisis económica. El gobierno se planteaba entonces su privatización y la eventual fusión con la operadora doméstica ✈Merpati que operaba la mayoría de los vuelos a las islas más remotas.

This brochure shows us a very different Garuda as we know it today. In 1995 the Indonesian carrier still had an impressive north American and European network, besides its Asian and domestic operation. The Government was at the time mulling its privatisation and merge with the domestic airline ✈Merpati, which flew to the smallest and remotest islands.
In the late 90's the airline had some disastrous accidents and this, togeteher with the financial crisis, lead to a severe reduction of its network. Garuda has restarted its European services (to Amstedam, due to cultural ties as a Netherlands ex-colony) after some years on the European blacklist.
