Una colección de mapas equivocados (II)

Como en un post anterior que puse hace tiempo, hoy vamos a comentar algunas rarezas que podemos ver en los mapas que publican las líneas aéreas para anunciar rutas y destinos. Y, como la vez anterior, sólo señalo algunos muy evidentes. Os invito a pasear la mirada por estos errores involuntarios que convierten estos mapas en pasatiempos entre divertidos y ligeramente inquietantes...

Just like on a previous post, I am focusing today on airline route maps with some mistakes on them. I am just pointing out some very easy to spot mistakes and I strongly encourage you to have some time looking at the maps for some more. Some of them are just funny, some others are mildly disturbing...

Canadian (1988),  con una Lisboa situada (muy) al sur de Portugal y que casi se sale del país en el mapa ...

Lisbon was placed way too south, almost off the country ..

Ethiopian publicó este mapa cuando Madrid aun era un destino al que estaban planteándose volver, y como otras muchas compañías, con grandes problemas para situarlo en el mapa.

This map was published when Ethiopian was considering its return to Madrid. The African carrier had, like many other airlines, placing Madrid in the map. Pretty much like the El Al map below.

Un mapa bastante extraño de la ČSA (1978), no sólo porque algunas ciudades (Madrid incluída, claro) están mal situadas; también porque los continentes, sobre todo el americano y el africano, están distorsionados  de forma rara.

An awkward map published by ČSA in 1978. Not only some cities are misplaced, including, unsurprisingly, Madrid; continent shapes are bizarrely distorted. 

En el mapa de Syrian (2004), aparte de que varias ciudades (no sólo Madrid, también otras como Estocolmo) están mal situadas, se usa un extraño código de colores sin indicar qué significa y algunas ciudades aparecen "situadas" (?) en el mapa sin indicar de cuáles se trata. Parece que ni ellos sabían a dónde volaban.

This Syrian map failed not only at placing some cities, Madrid included; it also uses some colour coding which is not explained on the map, and it also lacks airport codes for some destinations. 

Otro ejemplo de Varig (1986), una aerolínea a la que se le daba especialmente mal situar sus destinos europeos y en particular los de la Península Ibérica.

Another Varig example, an airline which was particularlly bad at placing European cities on its maps. 

Y por último, un caso de United (1994), en el que las ciudades parecen estar razonablemente colocadas, pero que se arma un lío con las zonas horarias y acaba haciendo algo muy raro dividiendo la Península Ibérica en tres.

An United map to end with. This time, cities are correctly placed, but for some reason they had trouble with time zones and there are now three different official times in the Iberian Peninsula.

MAT Macedonian Airlines (2004)

Sin duda, no fue una de las aerolíneas más exitosas de las compañías de bandera surgidas en los países de la ex_Yugoslavia. Por alguna razón, en 2004 editaron este folleto muy presuntuoso, que es en realidad un objeto bastante absurdo y lleno de errores, empezando por usar tres idiomas en la portada cuando en el interior solo usas dos.

There is no doubt MAT Macedonian Airlines was one of the less succesful airlines which acted as flagcarriers of the ex-Yugoslav republics. For some unknown reason, this 2004 brochure is a cumbersome exercise of printed advertisement, full of silly mistakes, starting with the use of three languages on the cover whilst only two are used inside. 

En serio, normalmente no lo diría, pero intentad leer esto sin que os dé un ataque de risa floja. Mi parte favorita es "Our trained staff uses innovative approaches ..." .

Try reading this with a straight face. My favourite ever is ""Our trained staff uses innovative approaches ..." part

 Lo mejor, con diferencia, es el mapa de rutas. Los destinos de MAT se podían contar con los dedos de las manos, pero en el mapa sus rutas aparecen en blanco y casi no se ven, y el resto son líneas en gris que indican vuelos en conexión (aunque no lo aclaran por ningún lado). Un mapa muy mal hecho que merecía estar además en la colección de mapas equivocados

Actually, this map must be another joke. MAT only flew to handful destinations, yet this map makes you think the airline covered all Europe, even if it they had some trouble placing some cities. MAT routes are shown in almost undetectable white lines and the bolder, gray links are connecting flights.

BSF Berliner Spezial Flug (1991/1992)

En cierto modo, BSF es la sucesora de la antigua aerolínea estatal de la DDR ✈Interflug. Estaba basada en una antigua división de la empresa que operaba aviación ligera y helicópteros, y en ella trabajaron durante unos pocos antiguos empleados de la misma, operando vuelos regionales desde un Berlín ya reunificado.

The spirit of the former GDR Flagcarrier ✈Interflug lived for a short time in its succesor BSF. This regional carrier based at Berlin was mostly manned by former Interflug employees and it was based on a former branch that operated helicopters and light aircraft.

Iberia (1992), Reino Unido

En plena euforia de 1992, cuando en España se celebraba a la vez unos Juegos Olímpicos, una Expo y para que no se celara, una capitalidad cultural europea en Madrid de propina ... Este folleto de Iberia es una mezcla de propaganda turística e información de vuelos, horarios y tarifas, para volar entre el Reino Unido (entonces solo volaban a Londres y Manchester) y cualquier punto de la red doméstica, bien en la matriz o en las otras compañías del grupo.

There are many lights and shadows about this, but 1992 was a great year for Spain, as the country was hosting at the same time a World Expo, Olympic Games and Madrid was Europe's cultural capital to top it all... This Iberia brochure is both a touristic magazine and a timetable and fares information booklet, showing how you could use any of the Iberia Group airlines to fly between any Spanish domestic airport and the UK (where the only destinations at the time were London and Manchester) 

Bonus track : esta tarjeta promocional con lo que era entonces la nave insignia de la flota (el 747-200) y las aerolíneas españolas que formaban el grupo. Por entonces Iberia todavía volaba a Japón y, como sabéis, se rumorea que puede anunciar en breve que lo vuelva a hacer ...

A promo card of the Iberia group, displaying what at the time was the flagship in the Iberia fleet (the 747-200) and the Spanish member airlines. Iberia was still flying to Japan back then, and it is stronly rumoured that it might return soon to the Asian market ...

Atlantic Airways (1999)

Ha habido muchos intentos de meterse en el mercado de aviación regional en Canarias, en el que desde su creación la operadora líder ha sido la ex-filial de Iberia ✈Binter.  Atlantic Airways fue uno de estos intentos. Estaba vinculada a la naviera Boluda y competía también con ✈Naysa en el mercado interinsular.

There have been many attempts to break into the Canary Islands regional aviation market, where the former Iberia subsidiary ✈Binter has been the lead airline since its creation. Atlantic Airways, a member of the Boluda sealines group, was one of such smaller airlines and it did not last for a long time. ✈Naysa was another inter island hopper fighting for its own share of the market at the time.

Además de la programación completa de vuelos de Cayman Airways, este folleto incluía algunos vuelos en conexión a través del hub en Miami de la Pan Am.

This brochure listed the whole Cayman Airways network schedule, as well as some selected connecting flights on Pan Am via their Miami hub. 

Alitalia / Air One (2012), España

Air Lithuania (1997/1998)

Lituania mantuvo durante un tiempo dos aerolíneas estatales: ✈Lithuanian Airlines que operaba desde Vilnius, y Air Lithuania que volaba desde Kaunas y Palanga. Ambas se unieron más tarde en una sola empresa.

Lo que más me gusta de este folleto es la descripción creativa que hacen de los modelos que tenían en su flota ...

For some years, Lithuania had two state airlines. One was ✈Lithuanian Airlines, flying from Vilnius, and the other one was Air Lithuania, which served both Kaunas and Palanga. Both airlines were later merged into a single one.

The best thing about this timetable is the funny descriptions used to describe the aircraft in the Air Lithuania fleet at the time ...
