CAAC (1977)

Aparte de unas pocas palabras en inglés en la portada, este horario está escrito íntegramente en chino, por lo que no es muy amigable para los usuarios extranjeros.

Es todo un reflejo de su época, en la que China estaba inifinitamente más cerrada al mundo de lo que está hoy en día, y un buen ejemplo de lo que eran las relaciones internacionales y los enlaces aéreos en los tiempos de la Guerra Fría. Por ejemplo, CAAC sólo volaba a tres destinos en Europa: París, Bucarest y Tirana (!) Por esta razón, aparte del mapa de rutas y una página de vuelos domésticos, he incluido fundamentalmente las páginas que cubren las rutas internacionales.

Abajo dejo un listado de las rutas para que se puedan entender mejor los cuadros. Son apenas unas cuantas páginas que incluían los vuelos de la propia  CAAC y de unas pocas compañías extranjeras:   Air France, JAL, Swissair, Ethiopian Airlines, Aeroflot, CAAK (la antecesora de Air Koryo) y TAROM.

This timetable was not very user-friendly for foreigners. It was printed entirely in Chinese, other than three English words on its cover.

This is a very good example of how China was not nearly as open to the world as it is today, and a very good snapshot  of international air links during the Cold War years (take as an example the European destinations served at the time: Paris, Bucharest and Tirana)  I've  scanned the route map and one sample page of domestic flights, and the few pages covering international routes.

You will find a listing below, which will help understand the tables better. Not only CAAC flights are listed, but also those flown by foreign airlines: Air France, JAL, Swissair, Ethiopian Airlines, Aeroflot, CAAK (from North korea) and TAROM.

Ecuatoriana (1977)

Dos ediciones de la aerolínea Ecuatoriana de 1977 (julio y noviembre). Para entonces, la empresa había sido nacionalizada y en línea con su slogan "The airline of all the Americas"  cubría todo el continente de norte a sur.

Two Ecuatoriana timetables (july and november issued) from the year 1977. The airline had been nationalized by then and true to its "The airline of all the Americas" slogan it covered the American continent from North to South. 

Air Pacific (1977)

Air Pacific es una de las aerolíneas "grandes" en la región, o al menos tiene vuelos de larga distancia a los EEUU y el sur de Asia, pero en 1977 era una compañía bastante más pequeña de lo que es ahora. Volaban con el Bac 1-11 haciendo una serie de saltos entre las islas de la zona y Australia. Este tipo de vuelos, que enlazan las capitales de la región, me recuerdan a la situación que había en Centroamérica antes de que se formara el grupo Taca, cuando cada país tenía su propia aerolínea ... Además, en los años 70 las compañías sudamericanas también volaban con este modelo de avión.

Air Pacific is one of the "big" players in the Pacific region, as it flies widebodies in longhaul flights to the USA  and southern Asia. In 1977 it was a much smaller airline that was island-hopping with the Bac 1-11 going as far as Australia. It somewhat remembers me the times in Central America when the Taca group was not yet present and every country had its own little airline which almost the same routes between national capitals... plus, the airlines in Central America also flew this kind of aircraft in the 70's. 

Los "50 años haciendo amigos" de Iberia

En 1977, Iberia cumplía 50 años y lo celebró con el slogan, bastante acertado,  "50 años haciendo amigos" En esa época realizó un cambio de imagen bastante importante e introdujo la imagen y logo actuales que tan bien conocemos y a los que les quedan unos meses de vida, además de nuevos uniformes. También eran unos años de crecimiento para la empresa, que en los años siguientes se expandía añadiendo nuevos destinos.

In 1977, Iberia was 50 years old and  the chosen motto was "50 años haciendo amigos" (Making friends for 50 years) That year the current corporate colours and logo that we know so well were introduced, and some other changes like new uniforms as well. As I said some days ago, just in a few months there will be a new fresher corporate identity which will replace the current one. Those were also years of growth for Iberia, which was expanding and adding new destinations.

En los años siguientes, se continuó usando esta frase, aunque ahora era "más de 50 años haciendo amigos", como en este anuncio de 1978, sobre la nueva ruta a Moscú. Creo que también es muy indicativo de los cambios políticos de esa época, porque dudo mucho que antes se hubieran planteado siquiera que Iberia podía volar a un país que estaba detrás del telón de acero...

Iberia continued using the same slogan in the following years, only that it changed slightly to mean "Making friends for over 50 years", like in this 1978 ad, introducing the new Moscow route. I think it also shows how politics were changing in Spain, as just some years before it would be very hard to imagine that Iberia would ever fly to a country behind the Iron Wall...

Unos cuantos anuncios más, de 1979, anunciando nuevos destinos, bastante sorprendentes para el mercado tradicional de la compañía, en El Cairo, Kuwait y Jeddah.Por cierto, que cuando Iberia abrió una oficina comercial en Arabia Saudita nombró delegado a Osama Bin Laden.

Some 1979 ads, introducing rather unusual new destinations for the Spanish airline which had always focused on the Europe-Latin America markets: Cairo, Kuwait and Jeddah. An obscure trivia fact: Iberia appointed Osama Bin Laden as regional manager when it opened its Saudi Arabia sales office...

Lanica (1977)

Lanica era la línea aérea estatal nicaragüense hasta la revolución sandinista de 1979. Fue sustituida por Aeronica (y más tarde por Nica, hoy parte del grupo Taca). Volaban con 727 a Miami, San Salvador, Guatemala, México DF y Panamá.

Lanica was the state owned airline from Nicaragua, until it was grounded in 1979 after the Sandinista revolution. A new airline, Aeronica, started some time later, and even later Nica (which is now part of the grupo Taca) was the Nicaraguan carrier. Lanica flew with 727 to Miami and the neighbouring cities of Panama, Guatemala, San Salvador and Mexico City.

British Caledonian (1977)

British Caledonian fue una empresa británica basada en Londres Gatwick que operó en los 70 y 80, compitiendo con British Airways, con una red de destinosen Europa, Africa y Sudamérica. Fue adquirida por British Airways en 1987.

British Caledonian was a large British airline, with a base at London_Gatwick airport, which flew to European, African and South American destinations in the 70's and 80's , posing big competence against British Airways, until both airlines merged in 1987.

Un horario especialmente fascinante, que para mi representa mucho de lo que significaba la aviacion en Europa en los años 70 y 80, con un montón de rutas "exóticas" operadas por pequeñas compañias como Colmar-Paris en Air Alsace y empresas como British Caledonian que cubrían como alternativa a British Airways una red de destinos europeos un tanto excéntrica y una impresionante red intercontinental.

This is a fascinating timetable, showing much of what is lost in European (and world) aviation and a hint of the airline scene in Europe in the 70's and the 80's : lots of small airlines flying "odd" routes such as Colmar-London by Air Alsace, connecting with carriers such as British Caledonian which provided an "alternative" service to British Airways, with a somewhat eccentric European network and an impressive array of intercontinental destinations.
