Air Zimbabwe (1997)

Una portada realmente horrorosa para este folleto de una época en la que Air Zimbabwe vivió, como dije ayer, tiempos mejores y más felices, en los que la red llegaba a Frankfurt y Londres en Europa y a Sidney en Australia, con una variedad de aparatos que iban desde el 707 (!)  767, pasando por el Fokker 100 y el Bae 146 para vuelos regionales. 

This 1997 brochure may have a really hideous cover, but it is a good example of better and happier times for Air Zimbabwe, as I said yesterday, when the airline was flying to Europe (London and Frankfurt) and to Sidney, using a variety of different planes, ranging from the 707 (!) to the 767, including some Fokker 100 and Bae 146 for regional services. 

Air Zimbabwe (2011)

En tiempos, Air Zimbabwe tuvo una red de rutas que cubría vuelos domésticos y regionales además de Europa y Asia (incluyendo los vuelos a Pekín, debido a la influencia china en ese país). Recientemente, la red de la compañía se ha reducido muchísimo y en realidad es bastante difícil saber a dónde vuelan, si es que lo siguen haciendo. Aparentemente, los vuelos a Londres y a Johannesburgo ahora mismo están temporalmente suspendidos...

There was a time when Air Zimbabwe was a fairly large and proud African carrier, flying to Europe and Asia (including Beijing, due to the strong Chinese influence in the country) as well as domestically and a regional African network: it has shrunk to a handful of destinations lately, and it is actually not easy to ascertain wheter they are flying or not, and where. It seems the London and Johannesburg flights are temporarily suspended right now...

El marketing barriobajero de Ryanair

Reconozco que Ryanair no me cae demasiado bien, y esto es principalmente porque es una empresa macarra especializada en llamar la atención, sobre todo en su publicidad. Este es uno de sus anuncios, en el que denuncian la baja puntualidad de su rival Easyjet y la comparan con la de Air Zimbabwe. Lo peor, es el tufillo populista-racista al comparala precisamente con esa aerolínea. Logicamente, no es comparable el volumen de tráfico de Air Zimbabwe, que no es que tenga una reputacion demasiado buena,  en Londres con el de Easyjet, lo que facilita las cosas a la hora de tener un buen récord de puntualidad ...

I must confess that I am certainly partial against Ryanair, mostly because their bully attitude towards other airlines, which is pretty evident in their marketing strategies. This is one of their recent printed advertisements, where they accuse Easyjet of not being able to match their punctuality and that Easyjet has a lower punctuality record than Air Zimbabwe. What I really hate about this advert is that in my opinion it reeks of populism and racism. Now, not that Air Zimbabwe has the best of reputations, but they clearly have a low-rank activity at Gatwick if we compare them to Easyjet, so it would be "easy" to have a decent punctuality record.
