Air Madrid es una de las aerolíneas españolas más conocidas de los últimos tiempos, y también uno de los episodios más vergonzosos.
La idea era introducir el modelo de precios bajos (al principio, por ejemplo, cobraban por el catering en clase turista, aunque más tarde introdujeron comidas gratuitas) en los vuelos entre España y Latinoamérica e introducirse en mercados que no servían Iberia o las compañías latinoamericanas, sin dejar de lado destinos con mucha competencia como Buenos Aires. En este época tenían también un servicio de autobuses para llevar pasajeros a Barajas desde otros puntos de España (más tarde introdujeron Airbus A319 y volaban vuelos domésticos, europeos y a Israel).
El modelo de negocio seguramente no estaba equivocado, pero la gestión fue desastrosa a todos los niveles, hubo sospechas más que fundadas de un
mantenimiento deficiente, el servicio al cliente era inexistente y otras cuestiones de las que prefiero no hablar ... Finalmente, la historia acabó, como se esperaba, mal, con la compañía paralizada de la noche a la mañana y
miles de pasajeros abandonados y sin posibilidad de recuperar el dinero de sus billetes a ambos lados del Atlántico.
The Air Madrid fiasco was one of the most shameful moments in Spanish aviation. It was also one of the most well known Spanish airlines in recent times.
Air Madrid started as a "no frills" transatlantic airline (at first, for example, they charged for meals in Economy class , but this was later withdrawn) which flew mostly to underserved destinations where Iberia and other South American airlines offered very few flights from Spain, if at all. They also flew to key destinations such as Buenos Aires, however. At the time they also had a bus feeder service from other points in Spain (they later incorporated some Airbus A319 and started domestic and European flights, and they also flew to Israel)
It was a fairly good concept, but management was a disaster at all levels, there were sound reasons to believe that the airline was unsafe to fly and costumer care was simply non existent. I will rather not elaborate more on this ...
As many people antecipated, the airline was suddenly grounded by the Spanish government overnight, and thousands of passengers were stranded at both sides of the Atlantic, without any ticket remboursements.
