Air Nostrum (1994/1995) [completo]

There have been many attempts at regional aviation in Spain, and most of them have ended badly and in a very short time. Air Nostrum is undoubtedly the real success story among Spanish airlines of this kind. This is the first schedule published by Air Nostrum in December 1994. The route network was clearly oriented around the main cities in the Spanish Mediterranean coast and AIr Nostrum fleet was composed of Fokker 50 planes on a single class configuration, named "Regional Business Class" at the time.

It is no secret that the franchise agreement signed with Iberia just a few years after it started operations played a big role in the carrier success history.  Nevertheless, Air Nostrum  had a great reputation for the quality of its inflight service by then.

Nowadays, besides the  Iberia Regional core business, Air Nostrum , also operates flights for Binter Canarias, flies  many football teams charter fligts , and also tried (at the moment, without results) to replicate its business model (regional aviation under franchise agreements for larger airlines) in South America.

Air Nostrum (1996/1997)

I recently found an Air Nostrum promo folder with some brochures which was handled out when the airline started its Vigo-Bilbao-Valencia flight (Aviaco had been flying the very same route for years before) . There was an Aladierno inflight magazine which was loaden with info about the airline, including route maps, cabin plans and also lots and lots of self praise about their onboard product.

Air Nostrum (1995) [completo]

An undated timetable from the early years (1995) of Air Nostrum, by far the most succesful history in regional aviation among Spanish airlines. Besides   its route network map, there also are some Fokker F50 images and   a picture of their FAs inside .

Until 1997, the "Grupo Iberia" was comprised of several airlines, each one bearing a separate name and corporate identity and flying with their own flight code. They actually even competed each other on some routes. In 1997, the remaining airlines (Iberia, Aviaco and Air Nostrum / Iberia Regional as a franchise partner) started operating as a single one, using the Iberia name and flight code only. This was the final step before Aviaco disappeared altogether, and  also a new approach to network management within the Iberia group.

There had been many regional airlines attempts in Spain in the last 20 or so years; Almost all of them, except Air Nostrum and Binter Canarias, have been an absolute failure.

Air Nostrum started in 1994 in Valencia with Fokker 50 planes and soon developed a successful regional network from there; In 1997 they signed a franchise agreement with Iberia and they fly under the name Iberia Regional / Air Nostrum since then. Unlike other European carriers, Iberia had no regional affiliate to feed their network (other than Binter, which was created in the 90's and did not exactly match this definition) so this agreement was a good deal for both airlines, more so since Iberia was already starting to concentrate at their Madrid hub and leaving other kind of traffic, specially low-key and point-to-point domestic and low traffic European routes to their partner and subsidiary airlines.

This brochure introduces the "new" airline which was Iberia Regional. As the Spanish average traveller was not used to this kind of airline and this kind of aircraft, a great deal of effort is made to explain this "new way of flying" and its advantages. It is also said that other strong European airlines, such as Lufthansa, KLM or Austrian already used the Fokker 50 on similar routes.

This page shows an Iberia Regional Fokker 50 bearing their first livery; it is actually the Air Nostrum scheme, only that it has the Iberia logo on the tail; the current livery is the same as Iberia mainline with the coloured stripes, and a small Air Nostrum logo near the aft door.
