Just like on a previous post, I am focusing today on airline route maps with some mistakes on them. I am just pointing out some very easy to spot mistakes and I strongly encourage you to have some time looking at the maps for some more. Some of them are just funny, some others are mildly disturbing...

Lisbon was placed way too south, almost off the country ..

This map was published when Ethiopian was considering its return to Madrid. The African carrier had, like many other airlines, placing Madrid in the map. Pretty much like the El Al map below.

An awkward map published by ČSA in 1978. Not only some cities are misplaced, including, unsurprisingly, Madrid; continent shapes are bizarrely distorted.

This Syrian map failed not only at placing some cities, Madrid included; it also uses some colour coding which is not explained on the map, and it also lacks airport codes for some destinations.

Another Varig example, an airline which was particularlly bad at placing European cities on its maps.

An United map to end with. This time, cities are correctly placed, but for some reason they had trouble with time zones and there are now three different official times in the Iberian Peninsula.

United Airlines (2001)

An earlier Star Alliance brochure, when there were only nine member airlines (among them United)

United Airlines (1994)

In 1994, United launched
Shuttle by United, an "airline within an airline" which was a low cost attempt, aimed at regaining the market share lost to low cost competitors such as Southwest. Yet another example of long established carriers trying to fight the LCC model on their own grounds, copying some things from the low fares airlines (Shuttle was a single-fleet,  all e-ticket service at the time with a simpler fare system, etc) while keeping some of the services traditionally provided such as inline connections or frequent flyer schemes

United, Continental (1992), Madrid

United and Continental are already flying under a single AOC, after a longish merging process, so I just thought it was time to upload a post about both airlines. In the early 90's both airlines started serving Madrid, as they were expanding their European operations. This was partly because it was a side effect of the closure of Pan Am in 1991, but also because Spain (and Madrid) was a growing market for the air industry. Many Asian carriers also started flights to Madrid in the early 90's.

In 1992, Continental was flying to New York (Newark) and United to Washington and Chicago. The new United Airlines after the merge is still flying to Newark, and Aer Lingus is flying on behalf of United between Madrid and Washington.
