CLASSA Concesionaria de Líneas Aéreas Subvencionadas (ca. 1932?)

Hubo dos "líneas aéreas españolas" en la década de 1930, antes de la guerra civil: la primera, CLASSA, formada durante la dictadura militar  de Primo de Rivera y existió hasta 1932,  año en el que gobierno anuló el contrato con esta empresa y fundó ✈LAPE (Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas) .

Estoy muy contento de poder compartir estas imágenes hoy con vosotros: por un lado, un billete de ida y vuelta entre Madrid (Getafe) y Sevilla (Tablada) que incluye también un fascinante mapa de la ruta;

Por otro, un horario de vuelos de esta compañía, que aunque no tiene fecha, calculo que es de finales de 1931 o de principios de 1932 porque al igual que estas otras imágenes que colgué en un post anterior corresponden al breve periodo de tiempo en el que la compañía voló con los colores de la bandera republicana. A diferencia del horario, en la portada del billete aparece una mujer que luce ostensiblemente los colores rojo y amarillo de la bandera española  anterior a 1931 y que se volvieron a usar después de 1939.

There were two "Spanish airlines" in the 1930s, before the civil war: the first one, CLASSA, had been formed during the military dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and existed until 1932, when the government cancelled the contract with this company and founded ✈LAPE (Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas).... 

I am very happy to be able to share these images with you today: on the one hand, a handwritten ticket valid for roundtrip transportation between Madrid (Getafe) and Seville (Tablada) that also includes a fascinating map of the route; 

On the other hand, a flight schedule of this airline , which is undated but I guess it was printed  the in late 1931 or more probably early  1932 because like these other images that I uploaded in a previous post correspond to the short period of time in which CLASSA flew with the colors of the Spanish II Republic flag. Unlike the timetable, the front page of the ticket shows a woman  ostensibly wearing the red and yellow colours of the Spanish flag which were used prior to 1931,which were used again after 1939.

CLASSA (1930,1931,1932)

La Hemeroteca digital de la Biblioteca Nacional de España es una magnífica herramienta que os recomiendo visitar y utilizar de vez en cuando; entre otras muchas cosas, tienen escaneadas una revista de aviación de los años 30 llamada Ícaro. Cada número de esta revista mensual es bastante interesante, pero  incluía además el boletín de la CLASSA con información sobre la empresa, sus rutas y su flota. Aquí os dejo algunas imágenes; las revistas completas se pueden consultar en PDF en la web de la BNE.

Browsing the digital newspaper collection of the National Spanish Library (BNE), I have found that they have scanned and old monthly magazine about aviation called "Ícaro". Not only were this old magazines a rare and fascinating read, they also included a short "CLASSA bulletin" about the airline, their fleet and routes. I will post some images here; complete PDF versions of these magazines are available at the BNE website.

Ayer tuvimos una breve entrada sobre CLASSA, la que fue la compañía aérea española durante la dictadura militar de Primo de Rivera; En realidad, fue una empresa de muy corta vida, entre 1929 y 1932. En ese año el Estado anuló el contrato de explotación de las líneas y fundó una nueva empresa : la LAPE (Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas)

We yesterday had a brief post on CLASSA, which were the Spanish airlines during the Primo de Rivera military dictatorship. They were a short-lived airline, that lasted between 1929 and 1932, when the Spanish Republic founded a new airline : LAPE (Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas, or Spanish Postal Airlines) 

Por esta razón es especialmente interesante esta imagen de CLASSA con la bandera republicana; debió corresponder al brevísimo periodo de tiempo entre la promulgación de la República y la creación de LAPE. De este modo, pertenece al breve periodo que va entre la promulgación de la República, el 14 de abril de 1931, y  la creación de LAPE en 1932:

This is the reason why this image is so interesting : it shows a CLASSA advertesiment with the Republican flag behind the plane. Thus it belongs to the very short period of time between 1931 (the Spanish Republic was born on April 14th, 1931) and the birth of LAPE in 1932.

LAPE extendió las líneas de la CLASSA, incorporando una ruta a Lisboa (la línea París-Burdeos-Madrid-Lisboa se operaba en cooperación con la CGA francesa), a Baleares y Valencia, y extendiendo la línea a Canarias hasta Tenerife. Más tarde se abrió una línea europea que llegaba hasta Berlin.

The CLASSA network was extended and LAPE flew to Lisbon (The Paris-Bordeaux-Madrid-Lisbon was flown in partnership with the French CGA), the Balearics and Valencia, and also the Canary route added Tenerife as its final destination. Later on there was an aerial link from Madrid to Berlin.

Este es un horario de LAPE de 1934, en inglés y francés. Muy orientado al turista, ya en esa época se señalaban las Canarias y las Baleares como destinos del turismo internacional. La ruta entre ambos destinos se describe como "de paraíso a paraíso".

This is a LAPE timetable from 1934. It is written in English and French and is clearly aimed to cater the international tourism visiting Spain. The Balearics and the Canary Islands were already shown as top tourist destinations. The air link between the two was described as a route "from paradise to paradise".

CLASSA (1929, 1931)

Últimamente estoy bastante interesado en los inicios de la aviación comercial en España en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Hay alguna información dispersa en unos pocos libros y en internet también hay algo, pero de forma dispersa y difusa.

Este es un brevísimo post sobre CLASSA, Concesionaria de Líneas Aéreas Subvencionadas, compañía creada en 1929 durante la dictadura de Primo de Rivera  y que realmente no operaba como una empresa unificada, ya que en realidad era el fruto la unión de otras empresas, entre ellas Iberia. El mapa de la derecha es de creación propia y muestra las líneas que llegó a operar la entidad : Madrid - Barcelona (Iberia), Madrid - Sevilla (Unión Aérea Española), que más tarde se amplió a Larache y a Las Palmas, y una línea a París, vía Biarritz, en cooperación con la Compagnie Générale Aéropostale.

I am lately growing an interest on the early attempts on commercial aviation in the early years of the 20th century in Spain. There are some books around and also there is some information, albeit often incomplete, scattered around on the internet. 

This is a brief post on CLASSA (Concesionaria de Líneas Aéreas Subvencionadas, Subsidised Airlines Dealership) , an airline created in 1929 by the Primo de Rivera military directorship which actually was the union of several other airlines, among them Iberia. This map (own work) shows the routes which were operated by CLASSA : Madrid - Barcelona (Iberia), Madrid - Seville (Unión Aérea Española), which was later extended to Larache in the Moroccan Spanish protectorate and then to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. There was also a Paris- Madrid route, via Biarritz, which was flown in partnership with the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale.
