British Caledonian (1987/1988)

El último horario publicado por British Caledonian, antes de su adquisición por parte de British Airways; no lo he escaneado entero, pero sí incluyo las dos páginas que listan las operaciones de esta compañía, que si bien llegó a ser una alternativa muy seria a BA, cuando fue adquirida por esta estaba en las últimas.

British Caledonian had managed in the past to become a serious alternative to British Airways, but it was just about to collapse when BA adquired this airline in 1987; this was the last timetable printed before the merger. I did not scan it completely, but I do include two pages that listed the whole British Caledonian flights operation.

Genair (1982/1983)

A principios de los 80, British Caledonian empezó a hacer algo a lo que hoy estamos plenamente acostumbrados pero que por aquel entonces era tan habitual: asociarse con una aerolínea regional como Genair para que volara con sus colores y con el nombre British Caledonian Commuter services.

We are now used to small regional airlines feeding big hubs and flying using the flight number, name and livery of a bigger carrier, but this was not so common in the early 80's. British Caledonian was starting to develop its regional franchise British Caledonian Commuter Services and Genair was the first affiliated airline. 

British Caledonian (1973)

"Silver jet" era un servicio combinado de avión y tren para viajar a Francia.
"Silver jet" was a combined air/rail service between the UK and France. 

Estos mapas de rutas son mejores y más claros que los de este otro horario de 1977 que publicamos antes. British Caledonian tenía acciones en  Sierra Leona Airways, que aparece también en este mapa, así como hoteles en Sierra Leona y España. Algunos vuelos entre el Reino Unido y el África occidental tenían escala en Madrid o Las Palmas.

This British Caledonian timetable from 1973 has better and clearer maps than the 1977 routemaps I published here before. Sierra Leone Airways routes are depicted here as well, as British Caledonian had some shares on this carrier. It also owned some hotels in Spain and Sierra Leone; some flights between the UK and West Africa stopped at Madrid or Las Palmas.

Heathrow <> Gatwick Airlink (1985)

Creo que todos conocemos los dos principales aeropuertos de Londres, Heathrow y Gatwick, pero lo que no es tan conocido es que hubo una época en la que ambos estaban conectados por una línea de helicópteros para pasajeros en tránsito. Se trataba de una operación conjunta entre BAA, British Airways y British Caledonian.

Airlink funcionó desde medidados de los 70 durante diez años aproximadamente, en una época en la que estaba relativamente de moda el enlace por medio de helicópteros a/desde grandes aeropuertos. De hecho, hubo un intento previo de unir ambas terminales con un avión de ala fija: las operaciones de Westward Airlines con sus BN2 Islander.

I am prett sure we all know here know Gatwick and Heatrow airports, but a lesser known fact is that an helicopter link for transit passengers flew between them for some time. It was a joint setup by BAA, British Airways and British Caledonian.

Airlink operated from the mid 70's for almost 10 years; at the time, helicopter shuttle flights from/to large airports were not so unheard of. Actually, there had been a previous attempt of linking both airports by Westward airlines, using BN2 Islander aircraft.

British Caledonian (1977)

British Caledonian fue una empresa británica basada en Londres Gatwick que operó en los 70 y 80, compitiendo con British Airways, con una red de destinosen Europa, Africa y Sudamérica. Fue adquirida por British Airways en 1987.

British Caledonian was a large British airline, with a base at London_Gatwick airport, which flew to European, African and South American destinations in the 70's and 80's , posing big competence against British Airways, until both airlines merged in 1987.

Un horario especialmente fascinante, que para mi representa mucho de lo que significaba la aviacion en Europa en los años 70 y 80, con un montón de rutas "exóticas" operadas por pequeñas compañias como Colmar-Paris en Air Alsace y empresas como British Caledonian que cubrían como alternativa a British Airways una red de destinos europeos un tanto excéntrica y una impresionante red intercontinental.

This is a fascinating timetable, showing much of what is lost in European (and world) aviation and a hint of the airline scene in Europe in the 70's and the 80's : lots of small airlines flying "odd" routes such as Colmar-London by Air Alsace, connecting with carriers such as British Caledonian which provided an "alternative" service to British Airways, with a somewhat eccentric European network and an impressive array of intercontinental destinations.
