A mediados de los 90, antes de que aparecieran las grandes alianzas como las conocemos hoy en día, las compañías europeas estaban muy ocupadas creando sus propias alianzas en base a adquisiciones de otras compañías.

In the mid 90's, just before big airline alliances as we know them today,  most European airlines were busy trying to build their own little airline empires acquiring other rivals and linking with other smaller regional carriers.

La unión de US Airways y America West (2006)

Ayer comenté de pasada la unión de dos grandes compañías americanas, US Airways y America West, que fue una de las muchas que están ocurriendo en ese país (como Delta y Northwest, American y TWA o ahora mismo Air Tran y Southwest) . Esta es un folleto-carta que US Airways mandaba a sus clientes informando sobre el proceso de unión, con especial hincapié en los beneficios para los miembros de los programas de viajero frecuente de ambas aerolíneas.

I just wrote yesterday a brief comment about the US Airways and America West merge some years ago... This is just one example of other industry mergers in the USA, such as Delta&Northwest, American&TWA or Air Tran and Southwest which are right now facing a merger process. This letter was a brochure sent to US Airways costumers after the merger, focusing in benefits for frequent flyers of both airlines:

US Airways, Madrid + Metrojet (1999)

A finales de los 90, US Airways estaba expandiendo su red destinos en Europa y eso incluía Madrid. Hoy siguen volando desde Madrid a Philadelphia, y también tienen un vuelo a Charlotte en el verano.

In the late 90's, US Airways was expanding their European network and Madrid was added. The airline is still flying from Madrid to Philadelphia, and it also has a seasonal summer flight between Madrid and Charlotte.

Al mismo tiempo, creó en 1998 una filial llamada Metrojet, que operaba algunos de sus 737-200 más antiguos en una operación de bajos costes dentro de la estructura de la empresa (airline within an airline) Crear este tipo de filiales para hacer frente a las aerolíneas de bajos precios fue una estrategia que también siguieron otras empresas, como Delta (Delta Express y Song) o United con Ted, aunque ninguna de ellas tuvo mucho éxito. Después de su fusión con American West, US Airways se considera una empresa de bajo coste, aunque en realidad es, como otras muchas, algo híbrido entre lo tradicional y este tipo de líneas aéreas.

At the sime time, in 1998 the US Airways Metrojet subsidiary was created. This was a low frills airline within an airline that flew some of its older 737-200. There were other similar attempts to fight low cost airlines, such as United Ted or Delta Express and Song by Delta. None of them, however, succeed. After US Airways merged with America West, it is considered a low cost airline as well, even if it is more of a mixed model airline, like many others.
