Easyjet (1997)

Una jovencísima Easyjet, que apenas volaba a un puñado de destinos desde su única base en el aeropuerto de Luton, y que todavía se anunciaba con un enorme número de teléfono en lugar de una dirección web... Así recuerdo yo el primer avión que vi de esta compañía en el aeropuerto de Barcelona y lo llamativa (y extraña) que resultaba esa librea...

Here we have a very young Easyjet, which flew from its single base at London-Luton to a handful of European airports. Their livery at the time, a huge telephone number on the aircraft side and no web address, was certainly striking. I clearly remember the first time I saw this livery at Barcelona.

Easyjet (2000)

Las leyes proteccionistas suizas hacían que algunos de los vuelos de Easyjet desde ese país tuvieran que ser operados técnicamente como charter, lo que exigía que los pasajeros compraran a la vez un billete de avión y alojamiento. Easyjet lo solucionaba dando un cupón para una plaza de camping en el momento de facturar.

Switzerland tried to protect its homecountry airlines by forcing Easyjet to operate some of its scheduled services to Geneve as charter flights. Under Swiss law, this required the passengers to buy a combined package that included accomodation with their air ticket. Easyjet solved the problem giving each passenger a voucher for a camping ground at check-in counters.

Estas tarjetas están editadas por el propio aeropuerto de Luton y corresponden con los inicios del fenómeno low cost tal como lo conocemos ahora, cuando había menos rutas, menos vuelos y estas compañías eran menos conocidas por el público...

Two timetable cards issued by the airport itself. In 1995, the low cost airlines were still almost unknown to the great travelling public. There were fewer flights and also a much smaller choice of destinations flown by this kind of airlines...

El marketing barriobajero de Ryanair

Reconozco que Ryanair no me cae demasiado bien, y esto es principalmente porque es una empresa macarra especializada en llamar la atención, sobre todo en su publicidad. Este es uno de sus anuncios, en el que denuncian la baja puntualidad de su rival Easyjet y la comparan con la de Air Zimbabwe. Lo peor, es el tufillo populista-racista al comparala precisamente con esa aerolínea. Logicamente, no es comparable el volumen de tráfico de Air Zimbabwe, que no es que tenga una reputacion demasiado buena,  en Londres con el de Easyjet, lo que facilita las cosas a la hora de tener un buen récord de puntualidad ...

I must confess that I am certainly partial against Ryanair, mostly because their bully attitude towards other airlines, which is pretty evident in their marketing strategies. This is one of their recent printed advertisements, where they accuse Easyjet of not being able to match their punctuality and that Easyjet has a lower punctuality record than Air Zimbabwe. What I really hate about this advert is that in my opinion it reeks of populism and racism. Now, not that Air Zimbabwe has the best of reputations, but they clearly have a low-rank activity at Gatwick if we compare them to Easyjet, so it would be "easy" to have a decent punctuality record.

Easyjet (2000/2001)

En el año 2000, ¡incluso las compañías low cost publicaban horarios! Lógico si se tiene en cuenta que eran recién llegadas con mucha necesidad de promocionarse y que el uso de internet aun no estaba tan extendido...

Este horario de Easyjet, de todas formas, es un folleto low cost, de lo más simple posible: una hoja de papel doblada hasta tener el tamaño de un calendario de bolsillo, con toda la información lo más comprimida posible... eso sí, incluye los mapas de rutas y una bonita portada :)

Back in 2000, even low cost carriers published schedules! Actually, these airlines were newcomers to the market, in great need of being known by the travelling public, plus internet use was not as widespread as is it today, so it made sense.

Nevertheless, this Easyjet brochure is a low-cost publication: a single sheet of paper, folded and folded again many times in order to produce a pocket calendar-sized brochure, which all the relevant information squeezed inside as much as possible. They even managed to include some route maps and a nice cover :)
