Eastern (1988)

"Only our name is Easten".

Eastern was one of the main US legacy airlines and they actually flew to a wide array of destinations around the country, with a strong Latin American market and a hub at Puerto Rico, hence the "Only our name is Easten" slogan. They were also the launch costumer for the Boeing 757, which is clearly shown in this ad showing their route map.

In the early 90's, Iberia introduced the Airbus A320 and MD-87 in their short and medium haul fleet. They were brand new planes and the carrier was proud of them. An improved onboard service was also introduced, with several audio programs, LCS screens and hot meals in Economy class. No need to say all of this would be unthinkable today...

This brochure was focused on northern Spain and it mostly includes through fares via Madrid or Barcelona, but it also includes some flights to central Europe destinations originating in Bilbao or Santiago.

SAS Scandinavian Airlines (1988) [completo]

I am recently growing a soft spot for this late-80's European timetables, just before the buying spree many airlines went into in the early 90's and the global alliances a bit later. Some say that SAS is still thinking as it did in the 80's... this is actually another European airline facing severe economical trouble, and has just managed to stay alive at the very last minute earlier this week.

You can download a PDF file containing the whole schedule section and also the flight routings. It is actually split in two parts:

IB + BA = IAG (2010)

✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈

This entry was in my to-do list since a lot of time ago, and surely this is a great moment to post these scans ... As you surely know, and to make a long history short, Iberia and British Airways merged  into IAG two years ago. A quite unlikely and surprising move, even if both airlines were already Oneworld members and were approaching each other at the time. British Airways had never been a natural Iberia ally in the European airline scene, they actually shared a not-so-friendly past...

This is the little booklet that announced the new joint venture. The merger was, of course, celebrated as a huge event that would benefit passengers (yeah, sure), both companies and thumankind  as a whole. Two years later it is quite clear that none of this was true. Iberia is at its worst moment ever (including its dark years in the 90's) and it is facing a huge downsizing plan that includes grounding some 25 planes and axing thousands of jobs.

Some pages from the British Airways employee magazine, about the merger:

This Youtube video was posted recently at the Iberia official Youtube account and it is a surprising move since it tries to explain Iberia's current crisis. So far it is OK, but the reasoning behind the video is not-so-accurate, to say the least. No mention whatsoever to the way IAG has managed the merged airline, nor anything is said about how BA is growing and renewing fleet while IB is downsizing and giving away profitable routes.

New York Airways (1972)

I had blogged before about helicopter airlines, often providing helicopter links between major airports and the nearby business districts.

New York Airways is an excellent example, as it flew between all three New York airports, the city centre and some neighbouring airports such as Morristown in New Jersey.

It was a succesful history for some years and it also had interline agreements with many airlines that flew into New York, both US and international carriers. Like other helicopter operators it could not survive the rise of oil costs in the late 70's . It had to cope with a loss of public image after a cumbersome accident when an helicopter crashed on top of the Pan Am Building.
