En 1998, la TWA cubría todos los EEUU y tenía una serie de vuelos a Europa desde Nueva York y su hub de St Louis, además de algunos vuelos a Oriente Medio. De hecho, compartía códigos con Royal Jordanian y más tarde con otras compañías como Royal Air Maroc o Kuwait Airways.
En 2001, TWA fue adquirida por American Airlines y se puede decir que por un tiempo fue un operador regional bajo el nombre de American Connection.
There is no doubt that TWA was another iconic US airline. Its brand grew as a powerful pop culture cliché, pretty much like Pan Am, but unlike the latter TWA was not surrounded by an aura of glamour. Instead, it was one of the first airlines to introduce "low" fares. At any rate, it was a very well known airline all around the world and at some point its worldwide network was much bigger than Pan Am's.
In 1998, TWA domestic network covered the US and it was also flying from New York and St Louis to several destinations in Europe and the Middle East. Some flights were operared and codeshared by Royal Jordanian; later on, other airlines such as Royal Air Maroc or Kuwait Airways also became TWA partners.
In 2001, American Airlines bought TWA and the TWA brand was discontinued. To some extent, it continued for some time flying regional flights on behalf of American under the American Connection brand.
