Air Europa (1999/2000)

Por esta época, Iberia ya tenía su primer acuerdo de vuelos en código compartido con American Airlines a los EEUU, y Air Europa, bastante alejada todavía de cualquier relación con las alianzas globales, reaccionaba con un acuerdo de códigos compartidos con ✈TWA (!)

Por otro lado, Air Europa competía activamente en el Puente Aéreo, el que fue durante mucho tiempo uno de los principales campos de batalla de las aerolíneas españolas, y estaba también bastante presente en la aviación regional con su marca Air Europa Express operada con BaE ATP.

Hay cosas que llaman bastante la atención, aparte de las novedades tecnológicas que hoy ya están completamente obsoletas, como la carencia de un verdadero programa de fidelización y que utilizaran la tarjeta TuryOcio, que no sé si todavía funciona o no en algunos supermercados ...

By the late 90's, Iberia had already signed its first codesharing agreement with American Airlines on flights to the USA, while Air Europe was still a very much unknown of airline and not even near to a globall alliance candidate member. Its response to the Iberia-American codesharing was another codesharing agreement with ✈TWA.

Air Europa was also competing face to face with Iberia in the Barcelona-Madrid Puente Aéreo shuttle, which was for many years the main battleground for Spanish carriers, and it had also a regional airline, branded as Air Europa Express, flying the BaE ATP fleet.

There are, of course, some eye-catching oddities in this brochure, other than the rather outdated online/mobile services which were high-tech at the time; Air Europa lacked of a proper frequent flyer scheme and it was using the TouryOcio card instead, which is a supermarket bonus program which I am not even sure it is still alive today.

American Airlines (2000)

¿Os imagináis que una aerolínea anunciara que reducía el número de sus asientos en clase turista y por lo tanto aumentaba el espacio entre asientos? Suena a ciencia ficción, pero era la campaña estrella de American Airlines a finales del siglo pasado, luego tuvieron que dar marcha atrás despúes del 11S y la crisis del sector aéreo posterior ...

An airline offering "more room" in its economy class, reducing the number of seats and improving seat pitch, would be unthinkable today, but this was the core of the American Airlines marketing at the end of last century. After the September 11th attacks and the crisis in the air industry, American Airlines withdrew this "more room in coach" campaign.

This DialAAflight system seems ridiculously outdated today, but this was as closer as it could get to having an airline app in your cell phone !

Air France (1992,1993)

Es asombroso el número y variedad de ediciones locales que imprimían las principales aerolíneas europeas, como podéis ver con estos ejemplos de Air France de España, Madrid y Mulhouse, más o menos de la misma época.

A principios de los 90, y con una liberalización del espacio europeo recién empezada, Air France utilizaba su filial Air Inter para algunos vuelos europeos (Air Inter competía con Viva Air de Iberia en alguna ruta, de hecho) y también hacía algún extraño experimento como introducirse tímidamente en la ruta Madrid-Lisboa.

In the early 90's Europe was starting its airline liberalization and Air France was depoloying its Air Inter domestic carrier on some European routes (in the Spain-France market Air Inter was face to face with Viva Air from Iberia at some airports) and was also experimenting some intra-European flights such as Madrid-Lisbon.

It is amazing the sheer number of local editions flag carriers were able to print, as you can see here from these few examples (Spain, Madrid, Mulhouse) roughly from the same season.
