Carpatair (2010?), Alemania, Austria

Carpatair is Romania's second largest airline and one of the most succesful regional airlines in Eastern Europe. They fly from their Timisoara hub and the German market plays a vital role in their network, which justifies this Germany /Austria local edition.

Nevertheless, this is a good example of how not to do an airline timetable; first of all, it is undated (it was edited in 2010, my guess), and even worse, it does not list flight numbers. It is intended to show connection possibilities via Timisoara to Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. It  is also weird that Frankfurt (is a key airport for almost any airline) is treated differently and only a huge photo of a Fokker 100 is shown. The Frankfurt-Timisoara flight leaves at a slightly swifted time range and it is possible that is does not match the same array of connection possibilities of other cities in this brochure.

Helios Airways (2005)

Helios Airways was a Cypriot low cost airline that flew charter and scheduled flights from Cyprus to several European destinations. They also had an Athens-Prag route. They used 737 planes in a two class configuration (Helios and Helios plus)

In 2005, an Helios flight crashed in Greece and the investigation concluded that both maintenance crews and the pilots had failed to ensure the pressurization system was set to "auto", and as a result, the plane never pressurized. In 2006, Helios was rebranded as αjet and there were plans to focus on charter flights only, but the Cyprus government grounded the airline shortly after.

A few random notes about airlines in Equatorial Guinea

I have always been thrilled about this little African Spanish-speaking country. Of course, this also means I was curious about aviation in Equatorial Guinea. It is quite difficult, however, to read something about it, even with our current internet wealth of instant information.

Equatorial Guinea was a Spanish colony (officialy, it was just a Spanish province, just like any other in the Peninsula) until 1968; Iberia linked  Madrid with Malabo (which was known as Santa Isabel then) using a DC-4 and also provided inner aerial links within the country (to bata) and to Cameroon (Douala) with the DC-3, as shown in this 1958 timetable :

Actually, the Iberia route network in the African continent did not change greatly, even after the independence. This is the African route map as shown on an Iberia 1973 timetable:

This is an old LAGE (Líneas Aéreas de Guinea Ecuatorial)  timetable from 1974. I suppose this was actually an Iberia subsidiary airline that flew to Bata and Douala with some old Convair 440 planes. The Iberia flight to Madrid is also shown.

Iberia was the only airline in the Madrid - Malabo route for many years. As said in the previous post, EGA / Ecuato Guineana flew the route from the late 90's using Spanair aircraft. This sheet, with onward connections from Malabo with GEASA and COAGE (again to Bata and Douala) was at their Madrid office:

In 2006, the Guinean government grounded several airlines, including EGA, COAGE and GEASE. All airlines in the country are in the European banned carriers list, actually.

Spanair does not fly to Malabo any more, but Air Europa does, and since 2007 there is a new state-owned airline in the country : Ceiba Intercontinental. Oddly enough, their website is in French only.

Their fleet includes some ATR-42 and ATR-72 planes, and their network is shown below. Also, airliners.net published recently images of a Ceiba Intercontinental Boeing 777 (!) I wonder what will be the purpose of this aircraft ...

Recent news say that a new airline (Guinea Líneas Aéreas) will fly between Madrid and Malabo. Actually, the flights will be operated by the Spanish carrier Privilege Style.

Madrid is one of the few European airports with air links to Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea, a former Spanish colony. There is always high demand on this route, which was for many years flown by Iberia only. In the late 90's Ecuato Guineana de Aviación started as a Guinean joint stock company in order  to claim the Guinean flight rights between the two countries; actually, the flights were operated by Spanair airbus planes, and IIRC they were a codeshare because for some time Spanair was selling their tickets to Malabo on their own.

There are some very nice pictures of some EGA Embraer 145 planes at airliners.net, but I don't know which routes have been flown by these planes, if any.

This last ad is from 2005. The airline had changed its name to Euroguineana de Aviación by then.

Tikal Jets (2004)

Tikal Jets was an airline from Guatemala that flew with DC-9 equipment to neighbouring countries and also had a domestic flight to Flores.

Binter "Visite Canarias" (1996)

A Binter Canarias brochure with touristic information and some information about the airline: routes, fleet (at the time they were operating some leased Iberia DC9 besides the CN 235 and ATR 72 turboprops), schedules and their "Visite Canarias" promo fare. They also have a paragraph about regional aviation and how it was a common sight at European and American airports, pretty much like this or this other examples of similar literature.

Dniproavia (1999)

A rather kitschy looking cover for this magazine-style Dniproavia brochure/timetable written in Ucranian only. The airline was once a former Aeroflot branch at Dnipropetrovsk airport, and it is now owned by a state-owned entity which includes the airport itself. In 1999 they flew Yak 40 / 42 planes, but their current fleet is composed of Boeing 737 and Embraer 145 planes.

Frankfurt was one of their main destinations and here is some promo about through-fares with Lufthansa:

Transaero (1999)

In the Soviet Union, Transaero was a charter airline that leased Aeroflot planes. It was the first Russian airline that was allowed to fly scheduled domestic flights and to break the monopoly once held by the state carrier. Transaero was the first Russian airline that flew Western aircraft.

In 1999, their fleet was comprised of Boeing 737, 757 and 767 aircraft, and besides an extensive domestic network they also flew to Frankfurt and Los Angeles.

LTU (1998), Palma Express Shuttle

It should be a no-brainer : Almost every German airline flies to Palma de Majorca, and it is actually easier and cheaper to reach the island from almost every German airport than from many Spanish mainland destinations. So, it is no wonder that LTU (which was head-quartered at Düsseldorf) had this Palma Shuttle linking the island and their main German hub.

Air Yugoslavia (1989),Alemania

Air Yugoslavia was a JAT subsidiary that flew aircraft from its parent company. It was a charter airline that mostly flew domestic flights and internationally between Germany and Yugoslavia. In the 90's , Air Yugoslavia officially existed as an independent "airline" even if it did not fly a single flight. It got eventually replaced by the JAT Charter department.

Prima Air (1996)

Yet another Spanish regional airline born in the 90's. This one was very short-lived and very few people have ever heard of it.

Fly Air was an air ambulance company that decided to start its own passenger airline in the mid 90's. Prima Air was based at Santiago de Compostela and flew Saab 340 aircraft, a model that was not a usual sight in Spain at the time. Galicia had never had good aerial connections, and surface transport is still quite lacking, so there was probably room for a small regional airline.Their proposed route network included some airports in Northern Spain (Bilbao, Asturias, Santander) but if I recall correctly they started serving Paris towards the summer season (There are only two pics of this airline at the airliners.net database and they both were taken at CDG)

Eventually, the airline shut down only some months after, as the owners were scared of the huge losses...

Air Madrid (2005)

The Air Madrid fiasco was one of the most shameful moments in Spanish aviation. It was also one of the most well known Spanish airlines in recent times.

Air Madrid started as a "no frills" transatlantic airline (at first, for example,  they charged for meals in Economy class , but this was later withdrawn) which flew mostly to underserved destinations where Iberia and other South American airlines offered very few flights from Spain, if at all. They also flew to key destinations such as Buenos Aires, however. At the time they also had a bus feeder service from other points in Spain (they later incorporated some Airbus A319 and started domestic and European flights, and they also flew to Israel)

It was a fairly good concept, but management was a disaster at all levels, there were sound
reasons to believe that the airline was unsafe to fly and costumer care was simply non existent. I will rather not elaborate more on this ...

As many people antecipated, the airline was suddenly grounded by the Spanish government overnight, and thousands of passengers were stranded at both sides of the Atlantic, without any ticket remboursements.
