LC Busre (2003)

LC Busre is a Peruvian regional airline that flies domestically using Fairchild Metro III airplanes; I honestly don't know what this weird name stands for. They also have a funny sounding slogan: "Más que una aerolínea, un sentimiento" which translates as "More than an airline, a feeling". At any rate, Peruvian airlines seem to come and go every few years or even months, yet this smallish carrier has managed to survive for more than 20 years already

Coast Air (2005)

Coast Air was a Norwegian regional airline. It mostly flew domestic flights, but it started some international routes later on. It eventually became one of the biggest airlines in the country before going bankrupt.

Aquatic Air (1980)

Aquatic Air was a Australian airline that flew seaplanes to Palm Beach, a popular tourist destination near Sydney. There are still seaplane flights there, but as far as I know they are no longer scheduled flights.

LACSA (1984)

In the mid 80's Lacsa had an extensive network accross Central America which stretched both northwards (up to Los Angeles) and southwards (reaching Rio de Janeiro, in a joint Lacsa / Ecuatoriana / Varig flight)

Norwegian started as a small regional airline which traded as Norwegian Air Shuttle and it evetually became one of the biggest European low cost airlines, concurring against Easyjet and Ryanair. This is an undated timetable, issued in the early years when the airline still had a limited small network, serving mostly the money-making intra Scandinavian routes and also some flights Spain and Portugal. In good LCC tradition, Norwegian and" rebranded" some of its destinations, such as Murcia (Alicante).

Norwegian.com is used sometimes as a marketing name, focusing on its webpage, but at the time it was using the ".no" (Norway country code) in its name. A rather chauvinistic, yet sloppy marketing move since the word "no" means the same in many European languages.

VLM (1999)

VLM (short for Vlaamse Luchttransportmaatschappij, Flemmish Air Company) was a regional airline which flew from Flanders and nearby cities such as Maastricht in the Netherlands and Luxembourg. It heavily focused on routes to the UK and their main destination was London-City airport. It is now owned by the Irish airline CityJet and currently its aircraft bear the carrier's livery and fly on behalf of Air France - KLM regional flights.

Lao Airlines (2008)

Laos state-owned national airline is a regional carrier that links the country with neighbouring nations; Also, this brochure includes some basic tourist information.

Yangon Airways (2009)

Yangon Airways is an airline from Myanmar that insists on its safety reputation so much that for some reason it makes me feel uneasy about it. Its slogan is "You're safe with us", its board magazine is called Safe Wings and it even claims it is approved by the European safety agency EASA.

Its website is still online, but the airline stopped operations in late 2010. It seems that the withdrawal  of its commercial transport license was due to the affiliation of the airline with Myanmar separatists.

Rwandair Express (----)

An undated timetable, this one was certainly printed when Rwandair, the new (and rapidly expanding across the African continent) Rwandan airline was quite young. In its early years, the carrier bore the name Rwandair Express. It has now dropped the Express part (it seems the owners thought it made them look as a smaller, regional airline)

Current route map, taken from their website.

Ukraine International Airlines (1993)

State owned Ukraine International Airlines started operations in 1992, a year after the country independence from the USSR in 1991. At the time, it was one of the first joint ventures in the country with foreign capital. They flew from Kiev to the  main European gateways and great effort was made to present itself as a "modern" airline, using new 737 planes instead of older Soviet models inherited from the regional Aeroflot branch.

Aviaco (1951)

I am really glad I can share this 1951 Aviaco brochure with you all. This kind of timetable sheets were mailed to travel agents and other subscribers as a mailing list, and of course they were printed in air mail paper. At this time, Aviaco was a truly independient airline (state-owned INI bought the 50% of the shares in 1954) and it was quickly expanding across the Spanish domestic market including the Canaries and Spanish Guinea, plus they also had some flights to northern Africa and Marseilles. (The route network was actually not very different from this 1968 example)

Route map and scheme showing the appropiate schedule tables; At the time, Aviaco was flying to both Santiago and Lugo, an airport which was for a very short time as the main Galician gateway and which is now used for leisure/sport activities, even if future alternative uses are reported in the press from time to time.

Ryanair (1988)

There was a time when Ryanair was a very different airline than the current one we know well. As much as we might (or not) like it, if they had not gone the extreme no-frills path, Ryanair would just be a defunct airline today, pretty much like many other small regional airlines that flew in the late 80's and early 90's. In 1988, they flew chiefly between Ireland and the UK, with the exception of some routes to the European continent. Europe flights were operated by their Ryanair Europe branch, which was the result of acquiring the former London European Airways...

There was even a Frequent Flyer program...

At the time, Ryanaur was also advertising Aer Arann flights to the Galway islands. Aer Arann is a regional Irish airline which is now flying some routes on behalf of Aer Lingus.

Air Malta (2009)

In 2009, Air Malta was celebrating its 35th anniversary and was also introducing a new logo.

Codeshare destinations are clearly shown on this map, and also flights to / from Catania (a focus city for the Maltese carrier)

Air Botswana (2009)

Yet another small regional carrier from Southern Africa; Air Botswana is the national carrier and besides domestic flights it links the country with South Africa and Zimbabwe. In 2009 Air Botswana was introducing a Nairobi flight (a codeshare service with Air Kenya) which does not longer exist. Not shown on this map, another Air Botswana destination is Lusaka (Zambia)

An Air Botswana ATR-42 (Source); I really like the blue Zebra-like pattern in the tail.
