Today is International Women's Day. This is a nice Iberia cover from 2006, showing an Airbus A340 named after the Galician writer Rosalía de Castro

In 1996, Iberia introduced the A340 for the first time and decided to name the planes after prominent Spanish women writers, scientists and other women who fought for their rights such as Emilia Pardo Bazán or Bárbara de Braganza. By the way, Iberia has just signed orders for new Airbus A330 that will increase and renew their long haul fleet, a much needed move.

Some images from the inner pages. Iberia was doing well those years, and it shows in this nice brochure, with lots of detailed maps, fleet seat charts and information about the airline ... There are also some pages about the Barajas T4 terminal, the current Iberia terminal, and which had just been inaugurated some months before

TAP (1971) [completo]

In 1971, Portugal was still under the rule of the fascist Salazar regime. The Portuguese Empire (those were the years were Portugal claimed it was no small country) and the colonial rule were one of the basis the Portuguese politics at the time, and thus TAP Portuguese Airways had a fairly impressive African network if compared with their surprisingly small array of European flights. Actually, this is no wonder since Portugal at the time was "facing the Atlantic" and not the European continent, or at least that was the official explanation of their isolationism towards Europe. On the other hand, I really like the promo on the last page : "All airlines are alike. Only people make them different"

Korean Air (1981/1982)

(Actualizado el 17/VII/2012, mejores imágenes y horario completo. Updated on July 17th, 2012 with better images, complete timetable)

Estonian Air (1993)

Estonian flew for first time in 1991 as a separate airline, and by 1993 it was still ayoung company flying with old Soviet planes that once belonged to the Aeroflot estonian division. Their route network has not changed much during the years, and it has remained small at size. They had always flown international destinations from Tallin, but they have just started their first domestic flight in 2011

Cimber Air (1999)

In 1999, Cimber Air was a small Danish domestic airline, that flew from Copenhagen using ATR 42 and 72 aircraft. The timetable, in a very Scandinavian style, also shows bus connecions and SAS flights on the same routes (SAS had partially acquired Cimber Air before)

Cimber is currently a much larger airline, operating as Cimber Sterling as it has merged with the low cost carrier Sterling airlines. It now flies a European array of destinations, in a low cost style.

Current routemaps, from their website. The domestic network is now a little bit larger, but the airline also has a paneuropean network.

Air Canada, Canadian (1988/1989), Portugal

These are two local editions for the Portuguese market issued by the two largest Canadian airlines at the time. Air Canada was flying to Madrid with a stop in Lisbon, whilst Canadian had no direct flight to Portugal in the winter season (it had a nonstop flight in the summer).

Air links between Canada and the Spanish Peninsula have always been scarce. Iberia and Air Canada have both at some time or another flown between both countries. If I am right, Spanair has too (or it might have been a codeshare), and something similar happened with TAP. SATA also flew between Portugal and Canada.

On the other hand, I have read that the Canadian market is just not big enough for two large international airlines. It seems that Air Canada and Canadian lost much time and resources fighting each other until eventually Canadian (a former Oneworld member) was absorbed by Air Canada in 2001.

A typical route map from the 80's , when Pan Am route network spreaded around the globe, even if their domestic network was rather small if compared to other American carriers.
There is no doubt that Pan Am was one of the best known airlines ever, even for those who never flew with them or those who are not interested in aviation. They were (and they still have) a very recognisable brand/logo, and the airline represents almost perfectly the golden age of air travel. This mythical carrier was always present at every milestone in the history of aviation.

This is their last published timetable, before the airline collapsed in early december, 1991. As an iconic carrier as it was, well run was quite probably not. There are a lot of articles and books around there explaining why this giant felt, but quite surely Pan Am was nothing  about cost reduction.

As you can see, the once proud carrier had become a mid-sized airline with a hub in Miami and a single European destination (Paris). They flew with Boeing 727, 747 and Airbus A300 planes (at the time it was a bit odd that an American airline flew Airbus planes)

Most of their routes from Miami to South and Central American destinations were taken over by American Airlines. After the Pan Am demise, there were other airlines that used the Pan Am name and logo. Actually, there is still a Dominican carrier bearing the name and a similar looking logo.
