Back in 1988, Air India had an interesting operation that linked New York in the USA with Australia via London and its Indian hubs, with some additional "side" routes such as the African destinations, including the joint flights to Lusaka with Zambia Airways. Air India was the international carrier, whilst domestic flights were operated by Indian Airlines, a state-owned carrier that was later merged into Air India.
