A menudo lo hacían con mejores tarifas, pero nada que ver con el fenómeno de vuelos low cost de unos años después. Al contrario, solían ofrecer un servicio mucho más sofisticado.
Obsta decir que la mayoría de estas empresas desaparecieron, algunas como Lauda finalmente engullidas por esos gigantes contra los que pretendían luchar y Transavia, después de ejercer en el grupo KLM un papel parecido al de ✈Viva Air en Iberia, acabó convirtiéndose en la low cost del grupo.

The early 90's were exciting times in the European air market, with small, niche carriers tryng to get a share of the market held by former monopolies (often State-owned airlines). Lauda or Transavia are some of such examples, but there are many other such as the Portuguese ✈Portugália or French ✈Euralair.
These airlines lowered air fares, but unlike low cost carriers they offered a much better product and often a better onboard service.
Needless to say, most of these airlines went dust. Some of then got eventually bought or merged with the "big players" they tried earlier to defeat... Lauda Air, for instance, was some years later an Austrian Airlines group member. Transavia was part of the KLM family of airlines and it held a similar role as ✈Viva Air within the Iberia group, and later on became a low cost airline.
