As the name suggests, Dominicana was the national flag carrier of the Dominican Republic. Their route network covered the Caribbean area and some US cities (New York and Miami), plus they flew to Europe (Madrid and Milan) in the 80's using 747 equipment.
Like other South American carriers, bad management and political corruption led to their dissapereance in the 90's, and many Dominicans still have warm memories for this airline. At some point Iberia, Lufthansa and Thomas Cook showed interest in buying the airline, and there were further attempts to resurrect it, or to create a new intenational Dominican carrier, including the bizarre Dominicana International Airline, but to this day only smaller regional airlines fly the Dominican flag. Both Iberia and Air Europa fly to Madrid, and some European charter airlines fly to the island.
