Libyan Arab Airlines (1984)

Bueno, todos estáis al tanto de las revueltas en los países árabes y ayer han informado de que también las ha habido en Libia, uno de los países que se consideraban más herméticos a las influencias externas...

Este es un folleto bastante interesante por varias razones : la primera es que Libyan Arab Airlines (LAA, o simplemente Libyan, el nombre que usan ahora mismo) es una compañía de un país bastante cerrado al mundo que llama la atención por lo estrambótico de su política. En 1992, debido a un embargo internacional, la compañía tuvo que suspender todos sus vuelos internacionales (aunque antes ya había suspendido otros, como el de Londres, también por motivos polítivos). Relacionado con lo anterior, este folleto es realmente fascinante, ya que es toda una pieza de propaganda de la revolución libia, con frases como "DEMOCRACY MEANS POPULAR RULE NOT POPULAR EXPRESSION" ("La democracia significa poder popular y no que el pueblo se exprese") cada una de sus páginas...

Libyan es una empresa que siempre tuvo una flota bastante decente (en el 1984 volaban con Fokker 28, 727 y 707 por toda Europa, el Mediterráneo y la península arábiga) ya que al ser una empresa estatal y haber dinero detrás podía permitírselo ... Hoy, que ya ha reiniciado la actividad, vuela con A320 y CRJ 900 (como los que vuelan a Madrid) y tiene órdenes para A330 y A350...

This is a rather interesting brochure for a number of reasons: First, Libyan Arab Airlines (LAA, or simply Libyan, as they are currently named) is the national airline of a rather "obscure" country, and politics played a great role in the current history of the company. In 1992, due to international sanctions, the airline was forced to suspend all international flights (other services, such as the London route, had been cancelled before, also due to political reasons). Also, this timetable is a fascinating piece of propaganda, with political slogans such as "DEMOCRACY MEANS POPULAR RULE NOT POPULAR EXPRESSION" printed on every page...

Being a quite wealthy country (thanks to their oil reserves), and being a state-owned carrier, Libyan has always had a pretty decent fleet. In 1984 they flew all around Europe, the Mediterranean and the Arabian Peninsula using 707,727 and Fokker 28 aircraft. Now that they had resumed their normal operations, current fleet includes Airbus A320 and CRJ900 (this are the planes used on the Madrid route) and they have placed orders for some A330 and A350.
